Plastic-filled pierogies recalled by Pennsylvania company

Most Pennsylvania residents rely on companies to provide some or all of the food they eat each day. People trust that these companies are following food safety rules to produce a safe and edible product. However, this trust is often misplaced. Manufacturing errors can lead to contaminated and dangerous food products on Pennsylvania grocery store shelves. These products can lead to consumer injuries and, in some cases, death.

Recently, a Pennsylvania company has voluntarily recalled some of its food products to try and avoid injury. In this case, the Company -- Mrs. T's -- produced premade Italian style pierogies. According to reports, during a quality check of the product company workers found plastic in some of the pierogies. This plastic could be a choking hazard for consumers.

The company claims that the risk is limited to the mozzarella, tomato and basil variety of pierogies that have expiration dates ranging from May 20, 2016 to July 15, 2016. The recall is also limited to 16-ounce boxes of the product -- none of the other products made by the company is affected. People are urged to return the recalled food to a store for a refund.

When companies fail to uphold food safety standards, a product recall is just one of the many possible outcomes. If people consume contaminated food, they can get very sick. If the food is contaminated with foreign objects people can choke or suffer other serious injuries.

In these cases, companies should be held responsible for their error. Under product liability laws, companies are responsible for the products they produce and send into the market. Consumers who have suffered injuries should make sure to understand their legal rights if they have been injured by or suffered an illness from contaminated food.
