A birth injury can negatively affect baby’s quality of life

On behalf of Savinis, Kane, & Gallucci, L.L.C. | Aug 12, 2015 | Birth Injury

There is nothing quite like anticipating the birth of a child. There is much to be excited about, adding to your family or just beginning one, such is the case for many young couples. Most parents over-prepare for a baby’s arrival, trying to plan for every last detail before the baby arrives. On the other hand, most Pittsburgh parents never prepare for or expect a tragic birth injury that leaves their child with a permanent disability.

Birth injuries can be classified in two ways. The first is that the overseeing physician did everything they could, but could not avoid the birth injury that befell the child. The other is the physician or other healthcare provider did not take reasonable measures to prevent the birth injury and made choices that caused a labor mistake and an error during delivery. The latter could be considered malpractice and the injured child, along with the baby’s parents, may choose to seek damages for this wrong.

Birth injuries can range in severity from mild to severe and can cause permanent disability or even death. The way our law firm at Savinis, Damico & Kane LLC sees it, any negligent decision by a medical professional that leads to disadvantage birth injury is a serious wrong and should be made right as best as possible. Hypoxia, Erb’s palsy and cerebral palsy are all conditions that can occur due to the decisions or inaction of the attending physician or medical staff.

Often there are high current and future medical bills and care costs associated with children who suffer birth injuries. This is because many injuries carry on to become lifelong disabilities. Our firm’s website has helpful information about the legal options that parents have when their child suffers a birth injury at the hands of a negligent doctor or other medical staff.
