What is fetal distress and how does it relate to birth injuries?

While it may be true that giving birth these days is safer than ever, residents of Pittsburgh should never underestimate the fact that serious complications can arise during the labor and delivery process. If not properly responded to, these complications could cause a birth injury to the newborn infant, or even cause the infant to die. For these reasons, it is important for physicians to understand the signs of fetal distress.

What is Erb's palsy and the problems linked to it?

There are few things more exciting to a Pittsburgh couple than the prospect of having a child. While the focus is on all the positive things that can come with a new arrival, there are always potential risks that can come up when a child is born. One such danger is if the child is injured during birth and is found to have Erb's palsy. Erb's palsy can occur when the nerves close to the neck -- known as the brachial plexus -- are affected. They assist with moving and feeling sensation in the shoulder and all the way through to the fingers. If there is weakness, it is known as palsy.

What is cerebral palsy?

When a Pennsylvania family welcomes a child, it is supposed to be a joyous occasion. A family is supposed to be thrilled at the possibilities that lay ahead for the new little baby. However, when a birth injury -- like cerebral palsy -- threatens the health and welfare of the child, parents can become distraught. Birth injuries often occur when doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals make critical errors during the birthing process. Had the mistakes not been made, the child may have a very different life.
