Being diagnosed with a terminal condition like mesothelioma can be overwhelming to the patient and their loved ones. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may be entitled to compensation through a mesothelioma lawsuit.

Like with any condition, an early mesothelioma diagnosis is the best strategy for managing this deadly illness. As soon as you are positively diagnosed, your health care provider will devise a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific situation. So what signs should you look out for if you suspect exposure to asbestos?

Mesothelioma symptoms vary with the type

There are three main types of mesothelioma depending on the origin of the tumor: pleural, pericardial and peritoneal. Each of these types of mesothelioma develops in specific areas of the body. As such, you can expect varying symptoms.

Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma develops in the pleura (the linings of the lungs). As such, symptoms of pleural mesothelioma usually manifest within the thoracic cavity. Early symptoms of pleural mesothelioma may include:

  • Chest pain that is accompanied by persistent wheezing and dry cough
  • Breathing and swallowing difficulties
  • Loss of appetite
  • Body aches
  • Fever and night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma

This type of mesothelioma develops in the peritoneum (the abdominal lining). As such, most of its symptoms will manifest in the abdominal area depending on the location of the tumor. Some of the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include:

  • Abdominal swelling and pain
  • Bloating
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Nausea and vomiting

Symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma is the most aggressive type of mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma develops within the pericardium (lining of the heart). Like pleural mesothelioma, symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma will manifest in the chest area. Early symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include:

  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Heart palpitations
  • Fever and night sweats

Mesothelioma symptoms may take decades to manifest after exposure to asbestos. Find out how you can pursue the claims you are entitled to if you are diagnosed with mesothelioma.
