Residents of Pittsburgh and other areas of Pennsylvania may want to read about the help that mesothelioma patients are now getting from the use of proton beams. Those with asbestos-related diseases and their families will especially have an interest in learning more about the benefits of proton radiation.

According to the MesotheliomaGuide, proton radiation succeeds, where traditional radiation fails. A report has been recently written by experts from 12 hospitals; the conclusion of the report led to a recommendation that proton radiation was most effective.

Effect on the lungs of mesothelioma radiation

Traditional radiation therapy for mesothelioma can damage healthy tissue, including that of essential organs. IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) can lead to a condition called pneumonitis.

Dr. Charles Simon, chief medical officer of the newly created New York Proton Center, noted that because of the large area of mesothelioma, it becomes difficult to deliver radiation with the traditional methods. The entire hemithorax needs to receive treatment.

Safest radiation option

Proton radiation originated in the middle of the 20th century. It is within the last 30 years that proton radiation centers have emerged. Needed was a newer option, since the traditional therapy, IMRT, lead to tissue damage.

What does the proton beam do? Proton radiation puts a limit on the escape of excess radiation, ensuring safer outcomes for the tissues and organs surrounding the treated area; this allows radiation specialists to deliver higher doses to the tumors of mesothelioma. A higher dose results in a better outcome, according to Dr. Simone.

Lower pneumonitis rates for proton radiation

Using the same dose for treatment, lower rates for pneumonitis than those of traditional photon radiation was an outcome. There is less risk for other organs within the body as a result. Scattered radiation to the kidneys, liver and heart was at a minimum with proton radiation, in recent studies that compared the different treatments.

If you or a loved family member has suffered from mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases, it may be wise to consult an experienced attorney versed in this type of law. They will personally represent you in attaining the best outcome to surpass your expectations.
