The different types of asbestos

On Behalf of | Aug 27, 2020 | Asbestos

Mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases in Pennsylvania are are caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that falls into two primary classes and six types. While some of the types of asbestos are considered to be more hazardous than others, all have been linked to asbestos diseases.

Amphibole mineral family of asbestos

Asbestos types that fall in the amphibole mineral family are noted for their sharp structures and the ease of inhalation of the fibers. There are five types of asbestos that have been identified in this family of asbestos, including the following:

• Tremolite
• Crocidolite
• Anthophyllite
• Amosite
• Actinolite

Tremolite asbestos is typically found near other types of minerals, including talc. It has sharp points and is heat-resistant. Tremolite can be woven into a fabric but is no longer mined in the U.S. Crocidolite asbestos is the most dangerous type of amphibole asbestos. It has extremely fine and sharp fibers that are easy to inhale. Anthophyllite asbestos is sometimes found in insulation and cement. It is easy to inhale, and its fibers have long, sharp points. Amosite asbestos is among the most hazardous types of asbestos and makes up approximately 5% of the asbestos used in buildings in the U.S. Actinolite asbestos has sharp, needle-like points and was previously used in a variety of products, including sealants, paint, and others.

Serpentine military family of asbestos

The only type of asbestos in the serpentine military family is chrysotile asbestos. This type of asbestos comprises between 90% and 95% of the asbestos used in U.S. buildings. Its fibers are flexible and can be woven, and it is used in numerous products. While it is no longer mined in the U.S., it is still mined in Italy, Canada, and Russia and exported to other countries around the world.

All forms of asbestos have been linked to asbestosis and mesothelioma. People who develop one of these diseases may want to get help from experienced mesothelioma and asbestos attorneys. The lawyers may help their clients to trace their exposures so that they can determine the potentially liable parties. This might allow the victims to recover compensation for their losses.
