Driver killed by falling metal conduit in Pennsylvania tunnel

A 70-year-old man who was driving a vehicle for his employer was killed in a tragic accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike recently. The driver, who was from out of state, was operating his rig in one of the turnpike's tunnels when a span of metal conduit fell from the ceiling of the tunnel and crashed into his vehicle. The impact of the conduit hitting the vehicle caused the conduit to break through the vehicle's windshield and hit the driver in the head.

The driver was pronounced dead when law enforcement officials caught up with his vehicle, which traveled about a mile down the turnpike after the incident occurred. It is unknown why the conduit fell from the ceiling of the tunnel and an investigation into the matter is underway.

At the time of the accident the driver was hauling furniture and mattresses for his employer and the tunnel where the incident occurred is the only one on the turnpike where conduits are used to hold up lights directly above vehicles. The tunnel was inspected in September of 2016 and recently bids were being sought to replace the tunnel's lightening system.

This tragic accident is one in which it may be difficult to identify a responsible party. However, tragedies such as this one can still be the fault of negligent individuals even if no particular person is singularly to blame. The surviving relatives of the victim could choose to work with personal injury attorneys to better understand why this devastating event occurred and what rights they have to pursue compensation in the wake of their loss.
