Strong Justice For Serious Disease

Esophageal Cancer

Asbestos exposure can cause various types of diseases, including esophageal cancer. At the Pennsylvania law firm of Savinis, Kane, & Gallucci, our Pittsburgh asbestos-related esophageal cancer attorneys represent clients throughout the state and nationwide who have been harmed by this toxic mineral.

Esophageal cancer can come in two kinds. The first is squamous cell carcinoma that develops in the lining of the esophagus and affects the voice box or oropharynx. The second is a form of adenocarcinoma and affects the glandular tissue in the lower part of the esophagus.

Esophageal Cancer Symptoms

It can take many years for symptoms to develop after a person has been exposed to asbestos. Once symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • A heavy or full feeling in the throat
  • A feeling of blockage in the throat
  • Trouble swallowing, eating or speaking
  • Hoarse voice
  • Throat pain
  • Vomiting (in severe cases)

What If Your Cancer Was Partly Caused By Smoking?

Sometimes cancer is purely caused by asbestos exposure, but more often than not, the cancer develops due to a combination of smoking and asbestos. If this is the case and smoking strongly contributed to your disease, you may still have an asbestos-related lawsuit.

The Pennsylvania Bar Institute states that when there are concurrent causes, both parties are responsible:

“There may be more than one factual cause of the harm suffered by the plaintiff. When negligent conduct of two or more persons contributes concurrently to an occurrence or incident, each of these persons is fully responsible for the harm suffered by the plaintiff regardless of the relative extent to which each contributed to the harm. (13.180)”
